Got bass done on “Status Quo” last night. That’s 8 bass tracks done now. With any luck I’ll get the other two done this week.
I’d always “heard” and expected to have a guitar solo in this song, so I left a “space” in the song for one all along while demoing it. I spent a good 30 minutes last night trying to come up with a solo. This was always going to be the token “grunge” song on the album (which will otherwise be a bit more “indie” rock, whatever that means, with hints of alternative rock, though this is of course subject to change as I put it together), and so I’d wanted a “Jerry Cantrell” style solo in my head, but I couldn’t come up with anything I liked. I had the idea to try a slide guitar solo, but couldn’t find my slide. So I experimented. Threw some crazy effects on the solo track and tried out a few ideas.
I went with some some wacky synth-sounding effect on the track that I liked, played a simple melodic solo over that section and got a neat John Frusciante thing going on. Also threw in this little stuttery/funky guitar thing in the verses. It totally changed the feel of the song, and I think I like it. It had a Nirvana/Alice in Chains vibe before, and now it’s got more of an Audioslave/Chili Peppers (Stadium Arcadium era) vibe in there as well. Cool stuff. I love when songs just evolve like that. The whole is totally greater than the sum of its parts.
